UNODC

First of all, The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), established in 1997 as the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, is a member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group. It works to combat illicit drugs, organized crime, corruption, and terrorism worldwide.

This committee will discuss drug trafficking in Latin America, one of the region’s most pressing challenges. Drug cartels, such as the Medellín and Sinaloa Cartels, have turned the trade into a billion-dollar industry, using violence, corruption, and modern technology to expand their influence. One of the most notorious drug lords, Pablo Escobar, controlled the cocaine trade in the 1980s through the Medellín Cartel, causing widespread violence and destabilizing Colombia. Despite his death in 1993, drug trafficking persisted, with new cartels emerging to fill the void. The social, economic, and political impacts of this issue will be examined, along with strategies to combat organized crime and strengthen regional stability.
